Ingredients
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for rolling)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together egg, melted butter, vanilla, remaining sugar, and salt. Stir in yeast mixture.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and roll out to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into 2-inch squares or desired shapes.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry beignets in batches for 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving warm.
Notes
- Best enjoyed fresh, while still warm and fluffy.
- You can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough for extra flavor.
