Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 small green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup sloppy joe sauce
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- Optional: 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat olive oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
- Add ground beef, onion, and bell pepper; cook until beef is browned.
- Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Add sloppy joe sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper; simmer 5 minutes.
- In a bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Whisk in milk, egg, and melted butter until smooth.
- Spread cornbread batter evenly over the meat mixture.
- Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top if using.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until cornbread is set and golden.
- Cool slightly before serving.
