Description

German Apfelstrudel is a classic apple strudel made with thin pastry layers filled with tender spiced apples, raisins, and breadcrumbs, baked until golden and flaky.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough, thawed
  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, and lemon juice.
  3. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush with melted butter.
  4. Repeat layering 5–6 sheets, brushing each with butter.
  5. Sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly over the phyllo.
  6. Spread apple mixture evenly along one long edge.
  7. Carefully roll the dough into a log, tucking in the sides.
  8. Place seam-side down on the baking sheet and brush with butter.
  9. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for best flavor.
  • Serve warm with vanilla sauce or ice cream.
  • Handle phyllo gently to prevent tearing.
