  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: About 1 1/2 cups sauce (serves 4–6)

Description

  • A sweet, savory, and slightly spicy gluten-free version of the famous General Tso sauce, perfect for chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup low-sodium gluten-free soy sauce (or tamari)
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup gluten-free hoisin sauce
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 12 teaspoons chili garlic sauce (or to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, and broth until smooth.
  • Stir in minced garlic, grated ginger, and chili garlic sauce.
  • In another small bowl, whisk cornstarch with cold water to make a slurry.
  • Pour the sauce mixture into a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  • Slowly whisk in the cornstarch slurry. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens (about 2–3 minutes).
  • Remove from heat and stir in sesame oil. Serve warm with chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

Notes

  • Adjust sweetness or spiciness by adding more sugar or chili garlic sauce. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
