Description

French Onion Beef and Rice is a comforting, one-pan dinner loaded with savory ground beef, caramelized onions, tender rice, and a rich beefy broth topped with melted cheese. It’s an easy, hearty meal inspired by the classic flavors of French onion soup — perfect for cozy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice (uncooked)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can French onion soup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (or 1/2 tsp fresh thyme)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and cook slowly for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and caramelized. Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Push the onions to one side of the pan and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease if needed.
  3. Stir in uncooked rice, beef broth, French onion soup, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well and bring to a simmer.
  4. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Once cooked, sprinkle shredded cheese over the top. Cover and let sit for 5 minutes until the cheese melts.
  6. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • For deeper flavor, use caramelized onions made ahead of time.
  • Add mushrooms or peas for extra texture and nutrition.
  • This dish reheats beautifully — store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
