Ingredients
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow or spice cake mix
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven: to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare apples: In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and lemon juice. Toss well to coat evenly. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared dish.
- Add cake mix topping: Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the apples. Do not mix.
- Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the top of the cake mix, ensuring most of it gets moistened. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if using.
- Bake: Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly around the edges.
- Let cool slightly before serving warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Use a spice cake mix for an extra layer of fall flavor.
- For added richness, drizzle caramel sauce over the top before serving.
- If your topping looks too dry, add a few extra tablespoons of melted butter halfway through baking.
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days; reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
